Regenerative Leadership
Leadership has evolved over the past 40 years. We've moved from transactional leadership to transformational leadership and servant leadership, among others and each has made a significant contribution to a more effective and more humane workplace. Now things are changing.
I've been a promoter of change since the 80s when change seemed to be an option one could choose, or not. Now we see everything changing around us in surprising and unexpected ways and this will not stop within our life times.
It used to be that the leaders job was to maximize productivity and effectiveness in the workforce. Then we realized that the leader was the biggest influence in the culture of the organization. This insight changed the focus from control to inspiration and strategy. Now, in this time of constant whitewater, the leader becomes the centering point and visionary. But even being a visionary has changed. It is not just having a picture of the future, the changes are now so profound we - as a species - are being required to totally rethink our relationship to life.
We have to retool not just the "what" we are doing, but the "how" we do it. Shifting the how requires a much deeper understanding of how the world actually works and how human beings thrive than we have ever needed to know before. The planet is calling us into relationship and it is a call we need to heed to survive AND it is a call that opens us up to new opportunities in our own lives and capabilities as well. We are being asked to claim life instead of dancing with death. We are being called to thrive instead of just survive. We are being called to co-create not just create. We are being called into a whole new world!
Regenerative Leaders are learning to listen to the voice of planet and to the voice inside. By sharpening their sensitivity to life they are becoming the stewards of a thriving and robust community where every act creates the conditions that support life and the joy of living. A community where both work and personal experiences are suffused with meaning bringing a joy and satisfaction we have hungered for for decades.
